Fully loaded, the UX2 Diaper Bag Tote is absolutely fabulous!

Choose from any of our 40+ in stock fabrics or thousands of designer prints that are available to special order.

Inside you will find, two spacious interior compartments that are separated by a large center pocket with snap closure.

Both compartments have a full length zippered pocket, 2 wide elasticized pockets and a swivel key fob. Compartment one has two slip pockets and compartment two has three additional slip pockets.

There are a total of 12 interior pockets of various sizes to keep your essentials organized and close at hand. Each compartment also has two elasticized bands that are designed to hold larger sippy cups and/or water bottles upright.

The center pocket is large enough to hold a full size blanket or changing pad. This might also be an ideal place to keep a change of clothing.

There are a total of 12 exterior pockets: 8 slim, 2 shallow and 2 deep.

The three-way divided exterior side pockets are a great place to store your pen, phone and to-do list.

The padded messenger strap allows the bag to be carried cross body or around the stroller and can be removed when not in use. The double padded straps have a comfy 10" drop.

The bag closes via 3 silver tone magnetic snaps.

The overlapping flaps keep contents secure and allow for ease of access when packing.

A never ending quest for perfection

Next month, the Watermelon Wishes "team" will celebrate our sixth year of business. It seems fitting, to take a moment to look back and marvel at how far the company has come. When Darin and I, drafted the original business plan, we intended to purchase handmade goods and resell them online. As the inventory began to arrive, my discerning eye for detail was drawn to what I perceived to be fundamental flaws in craftsmanship.

Shortly thereafter, I began to experiment with pattern sewing. Still not satisfied, with the final product, I eventually discarded the patterns and began to freehand my own designs. These original bags sold for less than $35 on eBay. Of course, they weren't profitable; but, I was deeply flattered that anyone would even want to own one.

As the product quality increased, demand grew and I began to pay more attention to the cost of goods sold. Today, I have perfected most aspects of my craft---but, truth be told---I hope to never attain total perfection. I love to learn and frequently find myself analyzing the bag making process and subsequently refining my technique. The ability to accept custom orders in my Etsy shop, has been invaluable in the evolution of Watermelon Wishes. With every new request, I take a step out of the comfort zone and into a world of innovation and creativity. I love that feeling!

The bag pictured below was a custom order for a delightful Australian client who added a few distinguishing details to my XL Ultimate style diaper bag. There are several features which are new concepts and will be available on future custom orders.

Hello everyone! I hope you enjoyed a beautiful Thanksgiving holiday. I did. In fact, it was one of our families best "Turkey Days". I had the week scheduled off from Watermelon Wishes, which in itself was a huge gift, as I've been working overtime since January. The early part of my vacation was filled with shopping, cleaning and a few household organizational projects that desperately needed tackling. Feeling gratified with my domestic progress, I reserved the latter portion of the break, for more enjoyable activities like cooking, overeating and sewing. Yep, even with the 40+ hours of sewing I manage during the week, I still love to sew for pleasure. It is a true passion of mine.

Quilting is my current focus. There is a trend moving the nation called modern quilting. In my mind, that translates into a form of quilting whereby there are no rules. I like that. Just do as you please. Lovingly dubbed my "Vacation Quilt", the set pictured was made especially for our family room and includes a coordinating pillow. The quilt measures 52" x 52" and is just the right size to use for a winter nap. I love it, because it incorporates more than 60 different fabrics. I used a simple rectangular block design for the front and backed it in a crisp white flannel. The whole project took less than 4 hours start to finish. Time well spent, in my opinion, when you consider the joy this quilt is sure to bring to our family. As you can see, Isabel likes it!

Unbelievably time consuming to make, this bag has been inducted into my unofficial “Diaper Bag Hall of Fame”. Only two other bags have earned this dubious distinction: the Chocolate Lollipop quilted messenger bag I made for myself when I was expecting Isabel and a quilted Ultimate Diaper Bag which I made years ago for a customer from Amy Butler’s Sky Wallflower and Slate Full Moon Polka Dot.

My youngest is a collector --- of random things --- which she carries with her everywhere we go. One week it might be the 12 new pairs of socks and the next week hair bows, crayons, greeting cards, etc. It makes her happy, so we oblige.

A couple of weeks ago, she was toting a collection of hot wheels in one of those cute plastic bags a popular sandwich shop gives out with their kids meals. As she was climbing into her car seat, the handle gave way to the heavy load and her cars spilled out into the driveway. Oh --- the drama.

It was then, my eldest daughter remarked how ironic it is that Isabel has to carry a shoddy bag when she could have a Watermelon Wishes bag. (I know! Right?)

I explained how much she liked the size of the little one and that was what appealed to her, not the material, blah, blah, blah, Before you knew it, I was cutting up the little plastic bag to make a template for her new designer purse...

As of late, I have received several emails and even a few phone calls, from adoring fans seeking business advice.

In the past, I have posted my thoughts on a variety of topics related to business. Those who are interested, can scroll through the archives. Below, I have compiled the most frequently asked questions, so that I can respond to future in queries in a timely fashion.

I am always honored to hear from others who admire my work and appreciate your interest. I hope the information below is helpful. While there is not one "magic" tip, my advice to any budding entrepreneur is to follow your heart. Do what you love and the rest will fall into place.

Approximately have much did you invest to start up?

I believe we started with a $5,000 budget. The bulk of which was spent on graphic design services to establish www.watermelonwishes.com and the remainder on raw materials.

Where do you find the best advertisement (print, online, blogs, google adwords, business cards at locations, networking, word of mouth, etc)?

Extremely fortunate, most of my sales are the result of word of mouth and repeat business. As a result, I spend very little money marketing my products outside of the Etsy community. I enjoy blogging and frequently update my Facebook page.

How many hours do you put in each week?

Honestly, you and I would probably both be shocked if I clocked my hours. I love what I do and because of that it is easy to work a lot. It is not unusual for me to work 7 days a week, 14 hours a day, weeks on end. Such is the life of an entrepreneur.

How do you balance having kids and managing a business?

Family first. No exceptions. Striking a balance between work and home is something every parent struggles with. There is no one size fits all answer to this question. I have an amazing family who supports my dreams. That is a blessing --- indeed.

How quickly were you able to get going?

Initially I got started selling on eBay. Lucky, maybe, I had sales right away. At the time, on eBay, there was a steady market for custom goods. Now, with forums like Etsy and Artfire, there is an even greater appreciation for the term handmade.

Hi everyone! I am excited to share two new options which can be incorporated into any of our custom bags.

Option #1: Elasticized interior pockets, configured in 2 two-way divided pockets that are perfect for cloth diapering and/or larger disposable diapers.

Option #2: Side stroller straps. Strategically positioned at the sides of the bag, these offer the bag a unique shape and allow it to be suspended snuggly on most strollers as opposed to our classic stroller straps which have a longer drop and can also be attached to the shopping cart.

By request, we omitted the side bottle pockets and added two front exterior pockets. The snap closure was replaced with an oversized button/tab closure for style and a touch of whimsy. Out of no where, this fabulous idea just pops right into my head. I could see it clear as day. I tried, I really did try to fight the urge. "No, no, no", I said to my inner artist (whom can be easily sidetracked). But, the more I thought about it, the more I couldn't help myself. I just had to stop what I was working on and materialize the concept before it escaped me. The remainder of the day was spent perfecting my newest design, presented here. Super pleased with the outcome, I am so glad I let my creativity take hold.

What is your ideal handle drop?

A matter of preference, the handle drop is measured with the bag handle fully extended and is the distance between the center of the handle and the top of the bag.

A drop between 9" and 12" is comfortable for most people. I prefer a shorter drop, around 7", as I like my bag to sit snug on my shoulder. What is your ideal drop?

The moment I opened the package, filled with scraps from the quilt her mother made, I knew this would be a special project. Cut by cut, stitch by stitch, it occurred to me that this is the kind of bag a mother saves forever.

Hello. This is bag number 365. The first in a line of one of a kind "OOAK" patchwork bags which I am planning to sew from the oodles and oodles of fabric remnants I've been selfishly hoarding.

The next bag in the sequence will be bag 364, then 363, and so on. No two bags will be the same. And, many of them will be crafted from fabrics which have been discontinued and/or are near impossible to find.

A challenge of sorts, my goal is to make one new patchwork bag per day. I will be showcasing each and every bag here; in addition to listing them in my Etsy shop.

I am looking forward to this project for several reasons. First and foremost, I love patchwork. It nurtures my creative soul. Second, I have amassed far too many bits and pieces of fabric. When I look at the bins which behold this beautiful collection of material, I am reminded of the Shel Silverstein poem about Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout who refused to take the trash out. While by no means trash, my bits are taking up more than their share of space in the studio and one day would likely pile to the ceiling as I too refuse to throw them out.

It is a sunny day here in the village of Middleburg, Virginia. Isabel and I arrived in the studio about a half hour earlier than usual. We are working with some whimsical geometric prints today, in hues of brown and green, which distinctly remind me of the TiddleyWinks collection by Arrin Turnmire. Around lunchtime, we plan to sneak out for a walk and take in all of the new spring themed window displays. I will be sure to snap some pics to share with you later.

There is value in being organized

The theory behind my latest design is simple: there is value in being organized.

As the mother of four, the demands are plentiful when it comes to my bag. It can’t be too large nor too small, as I use one bag for my handbag and the diaper bag. I like pockets inside and out. It must be comfortable to carry and look good on my body.

Hence the inception of what I like to call my “Go! Mama Go!” bag. This particular design was made to hold the exact contents of my diaper bag/purse:

I incorporated 15 pockets sized to fit these items perfectly. Shorter than most messenger bags, the strap is padded and sits comfortably on my shoulder without slipping. I love that and it looks oh so fab!

The messenger flap secures via two silver tone snaps. There are 3 pockets tucked underneath the flap which are ideal for those items I like to keep close at hand, such as the phone. The rear exterior pocket is great for coloring books and other papers.

Uncharacteristic, at least for my personal bags, I selected the same material to craft both the interior and the exterior. The crisp look this provides furthers the cohesive element I was aiming for in my quest for organization. This particular print, by Amy Butler is from her Midwest Modern 2 collection, and is well suited for the application with its fresh geometric design.

A Passion for Patchwork

As you might expect, after five years of crafting custom bags, I have acquired an enormous collection of designer fabric remnants.

I always enjoy the opportunity to design a custom patchwork bag. A true one of a kind creation, every patchwork bag eventually takes on a life of its own.

The XL Ultimate Diaper Bag pictured was created for a busy mom in the great state of Louisiana who wanted/needed an eclectic bag that was large enough to use with twins.

Mission accomplished! In addition to the 8 exterior pockets, there are 6 interior pockets to keep the essentials organized and close at hand. And the list goes on…a zippered top, swivel key fob, elastic sippy bands, stroller straps, changing pad and diaper clutch…make this set extra special!

When it comes to fabric shopping, there are indeed many choices to be made. Depending upon your project, you may have identified a specific type of material that is well suited to your design or taste, such as cotton, canvas, wool, silk and the like. You may even have a specific color in mind. For my purpose---creating stylish diaper bags and totes that will last for years to come---I prefer to work with top quality quilting and fashion fabric by well known designers like Amy Butler, Joel Dewberry, Anna Maria Horner, Heather Bailey and Tina Givens.

The old adage “you get what you pay for” is absolutely true when it comes to textiles. Quilting fabric typically costs $8 to $12 per yard. Lower end cotton prints can be found from .99 cents and up, per yard and I assure you, when in hand you will be able to feel the difference between the two materials. This is called the weight of the fabric and it is the single most important factor in creating a durable product. The higher the weight, the higher the price and the longer the product will last.

Many quilt weight fabrics also offer exceptional stain resistance. In our house, we have a set of placemats crafted from Amy Butler’s Love collection that are used daily; and, every time I wash them, I am absolutely amazed how great they still look. Not a single stain, despite the best efforts of our four kiddies who have spilled grape juice and marinara sauce on them! Another benefit of quilt weight fabric is that it holds the color nicely, even with repeated washing. Generally, I wash my personal bags a couple times a year and am always pleased with their appearance afterwards.

‘Sew’ people, when faced with the decision to purchase the bargain bin fabric or not, think first about the purpose of the product. If you would like to wash it and need it to hold up to everyday use, I highly suggest not settling for a lower quality material. Likewise, when shopping for handmade goods, particularly bags, don’t be shy about asking the maker what type of material they use and why?

Aldie Harvest Festival Round Up

Yesterday, the girls and I took the bags down the road, a short distance from Middleburg, to the Aldie Harvest Festival. We enjoyed visiting with our customers, a beautiful Virginia fall day and some really amazing fried chicken! Sales were good and the event as a whole appeared to be a success, despite some challenges with the wind which was gusting upwards of 25 knots.

Folded flower tutorial and giveaway

Luther Burbank once said, “Flowers always make people feel better, happier and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.”

Crafted from fabric scraps, these folded flowers are a great way to add some color to the winter days ahead.

Each flower requires 7 to 8 circles. The circumference is up to you. The smaller the circle the more difficult it will be to fold. I used a 4” sizzix die to cut my circles, but you could just as easily trace a glass and achieve the same result.

Materials:

• Double threaded needle with 12” tail

• Fabric scraps

• Button

• Felt scraps

• Hot glue or craft glue

Step 1: fold the circle in half

Step 2: fold the corners of each half circle inward to meet in the center and form a triangle

Step 3: place the side of the triangle with the open center seam facing down and fold the corners of the triangle in to meet in the center of the side that does not have the seam

Step 4: fold the petal in half again and thread onto your needle

Step 5: repeat steps 1 through 4 until all petals have been threaded

Step 6: fashion the petals into the shape of your flower and secure the ends of the thread together; but do not cut the thread

Step 7: use the uncut needle and thread to attach the button to the center of the flower and tuck the remaining thread into the center of the flower

Step 8: from the underside fill the center of the flower with glue and cap with a small piece of felt

Optional: A hair clip, safety pin or similar mechanism can be attached to the felt prior to gluing it in place to make the flower removable.

Tale of a trade friendly shop owner

I love the notion of bartering and have found it to be an ideal way to obtain a variety of things that I may have not otherwise been able to purchase. The act of trading goods or services, absent the exchange of money, is easier than you might think and could be a great way for you to save big this holiday season!

Assuming you have a skill set or product to trade...

The first step, to establishing an effective barter system, is to define your desires. Create a list of those items or services which you are in the market for. Then, spread the word. This can be done with ease via your blog, shop announcement or website. I have conducted many successful trades through Etsy and am always delighted when fellow shop owners contact me with their specific requests. Like the look of my blog? Its couture design is the result of a trade with the brilliant Shalon of papermepretty with whom I swapped a Ziptop Ultimate Diaper Bag for her graphic design services.

When someone contacts me with a trade request that I cannot fulfill, I politely let them know that I am currently not in the market for said product or service and that I will gladly add them to my list of shops willing to trade and be sure to contact them if a future need should arise. So, there is no harm in asking!

It is my policy to route personal trades through my Etsy shop. A simple process, I have the other party add the agreed upon items to their cart and select “other” as the form of payment. My mini moo cards arrived on Friday and I love them!

Not familiar? MOO is an online company that offers custom photographic business cards and a mini moo card is half the size of a regular business card with artwork on the front and the back, just like the full sized moo card.

On the front of mine, I have a photo of my Ultimate Diaper Bag and on the back, I list my contact info and a photo of the building which my studio is located. The cards I ordered will be used to promote my Etsy shop at the Aldie Harvest Festival; but, I think this size would make a darling mommy card, for scheduling play dates and what not.

This afternoon, I fashioned a leather case that attaches to my key fob and holds 5 mini cards. It is super easy to make!

Materials:

7" x 1.5" Piece of Leather or Felt
Medium Eyelet and Eyelet Setter
Binder Ring or Key Ring

Instructions:

Step 1: attach eyelet at one end of leather
Step 2: fold the leather up just below the eyelet
Step 3: stitch the sides closed
Step 4: thread the ring through the eyelet
Step 5: insert cards

It is logical to emulate those amongst us who are successful. On Etsy, there are many talented artisans with unique product niches and that is a big part of what makes it such an exceptional community. And, there are also those who seek nothing more than to copy the designs of others.

Innovation is the key difference between the two groups. If you are original and true to your craft, you will strive to create a product that distinguishes itself from the masses. This process often takes time, money and an inordinate amount of passion. Many folks have time and money, but they lack passion and so they attempt to share the accomplishments of others.

This is not to say, if you can improve upon a product, that you shouldn’t. By all means, that is progress and synonymous with evolution. I certainly did not invent the diaper bag and I absolutely wasn’t the first person to offer customization. I do create all of my own patterns and as a mother of four, I take great pride in developing products which are stylish and functional.

Equally important, I also author my own product descriptions. Writing is not a skill that comes naturally to all. Working as a journalist for our local newspaper, I acquired years of experience and authored hundreds of business profiles and can assure you, writing is as much an art form as crafting. So, you can understand why I get peeved when someone copies my descriptions and/or shop policies verbatim. This folks is plagiarism and unless you give the author credit in your description, it is a form of stealing. Instead of paraphrasing someone’s descriptions, instead try and learn from them and use your own words to highlight the features of *ahem* your own product.

The bottom line, if you lack a passion for your product, you are not going to be successful. Entrepreneurship is neither free nor easy. You have to be willing to invest in your company and work hard --- really hard. At the end of the day, I am still energized and could happily work another 12 hours --- because I love what I do!

My advice to the burgeoning Etsy opportunist: make something you benefit from and use every day.

The glory of a morning riser

In the words of Jeremy Linn, United States Gold Olympian (and my sons swim coach) “It is a beautiful day and it is great to be alive!”

Summer is coming to an end in Northern Virginia and my favorite flower flourishes. Unique, the morning glory produces a new set of blooms every day. True to its name, you must be an early riser if you would like to take in its splendor. Lucky for me, I wake before the sun and get to see our mailbox blanketed in perwinkle and white morning glories.

Today, I’ve got big plans in the studio and am looking forward to introducing two, maybe three, new styles to you this week. Yesterday, Megan (my daughter who shares my wicked creative streak) was so kind as to sort and fold my private stash of fabric remnants by color. Thanks, Meg! I can hardly wait to dig in and begin my patchwork design.

Off to the studio I shall go. I hope you enjoy the day too!

Last weekend, we took a daytrip to the National Zoo to celebrate Isabel's 2nd Birthday. Not long into our visit, I overheard a mother in a stern voice say to her children: “Focus people! We are here to see the elephants.”

It struck me as odd because they were a long ways from the elephants. Did she expect them not to take in any other sites prior to the elephants? I have been wondering about this all week long.

Rethinking the pantry

Yesterday was the first day of school in our neighborhood. Before they left, my children inquisitively asked, “What are you going to do today, Mom?”

With glee I affirmed, “Reorganize the entire kitchen!”

They boarded the bus and I headed home (with Isabel in tow) to commence said task. Halfway through the job, I looked around at the piles and wondered if maybe I had bitten of more than I could chew. After all, we have lived in this house for nine years and I am pretty sure I have never rearranged the kitchen since it was first unpacked. Over the years, we’ve acquired several small appliances and dishes of all sorts; yet, we neglected to assign these purchases a designated space. The end result: utter chaos.

Determined to have the kitchen put back together before my eldest two returned from high school, I hunkered down and got the job done. Everyone, except maybe the baby, seemed to be quite impressed. That’s nice and I appreciate the recognition; but, I am even happier that nothing will be falling on my head when I open the cupboards!

Our kitchen is centrally located, and like most, is the heart of the home. It is the place where we spend the majority of our time and that is why I felt it was important to get this area back under control. Before I began this project, I set aside a little planning time to identify the specific problem areas and define their future purpose. Essentially, I had 5 issues:

Problem #1 – The Pantry

A large space with built in shelves and a door, this area contained paper products, medicine and first aid items; in addition to a medley of other small items haphazardly piled atop of one another.

Problem #2 – Pots and Pans

These items consumed four double cupboards and no one item ever went back in the same spot; so, when it was time to cook you needed to search through each cabinet to locate the right pot.

Problem #3 – Dry and Canned Goods

Also scattered throughout the kitchen, lacking any organization, foodstuff occupied 6 cabinets and a lazy Susan.

Problem #4 – Glassware (casserole dishes, bowls, etc)

All mixed in with the pots and pans…just not good!

Problem #5 – Plastic (sippy cups, storage containers)

Everyone has this problem, right? Miss matched lids and containers scattered all about.

The solution, I discovered, to all five of these kitchen oriented problems is really very simple:

Group like items together and place the largest items in the largest space.

Relocating the pots and pans to the pantry was fundamental in this process. The shelves are sized perfectly for this purpose and I am wondering if the pan---try wasn’t always intended to hold pans. Imagine that!

The second largest area in our kitchen is the space under the island. This area now contains all of our dry goods and canned products. This is ideal because I can place the groceries on the island counter top, quickly organize and then transfer them into the cabinets below. Hooray!

The larger upper cabinet is designated for plastic items and a smaller one for glass casserole dishes and bowls. The two upper cabinets by the dishwasher house the tableware and drinking glasses for ease in unloading. The lazy Susan is officially reserved for cook books and recipe binders. And, I have incorporated a space to hold spices and other goodies used to bake. Cleaning products are still located under the sink and a small thin cabinet now serves as the first aid center.

Ah, perfection!

A milestone for Watermelon Wishes

Amid the release of our diaper bag sewing tutorials, this week hereby marks a milestone for Watermelon Wishes.

Twofold, my intention with the tutorials is more than an aspiration to show others how to create a keepsake or gift. I would also like to be able to present people who hold a similar interest in sewing (and passion for bags) with the opportunity to manufacture and market a viable product.

Friday Factoid: There are more than 11,000 babies born in the U.S. every day.

Wouldn’t it be nice if all of these mamas had a handmade diaper bag? I think so!

Like each of my creations, a great deal of thought has gone into the development of the tutorials. Geared especially for the visual learner, they contain oodles of color photographs and illustrations; in addition to a handy “Basics” guide which breaks the construction process into five simple steps.

The initial feedback has been quite favorable and I am looking forward to sharing more of my ideas with you in the near future.

Good morning everyone, it is 6 a.m. here, and I am back from a relaxing and inspirational week in the North Carolina Outer Banks. We ate, laughed (a lot) and soaked up more than our share of sunshine. Do you dream of having a dedicated space --- outside of your home --- to make and showcase your handmade goods? If so, I bet you have lots of questions that you’d love to ask someone who has “taken the plunge”, so to say, and moved from a home studio into a commercial studio.

When I began to ponder the idea, matters like insurance, taxes, permits and lease terms were all considerations. One of the first things I did, which was very helpful, was to organize my questions in outline format with headers to group related questions. You can do this on paper or the computer. The latter will allow you to rearrange your questions and make notes with ease.

At the time, I would have been grateful to access another artisan that was willing and able to candidly answer my questions. So, while it is all still fresh in my mind, I have taken the liberty to respond to the questions I wanted to ask someone in a similar situation. I hope the information is useful and encourage you to post additional questions in the comment field. Please be mindful, the numbers reflected are based upon my specific circumstance in the Northern Virginia area and could vary greatly depending upon your craft of choice, credit score and location.

What line items should I include in my moving budget?

Insurance $400 (per year)

Business License $25 (per year)

Occupancy Permit $50 (onetime fee)

Security Deposit (equal to one month’s rent)

First Month’s Rent (should fit your budget, period)

Utilities (the properties I considered were all inclusive, so this was not an issue for me; but do your research because I have heard tales of HUGE electric bills, in excess of $900 per month in commercial properties! You can and should call the utility company and ask what the average bill is for the property you are considering.)

Movers $50 for my son (and a box of assorted donuts); hubby was free of charge (because he is just sweet like that).

What types of licenses and/or permits will I need?

A federal tax ID, sales tax account, business license, occupancy permit and a fictitious name certificate (if you didn’t name your company after yourself).

How should I go about locating space?

I searched for properties on Craigslist under Housing / Office & Commercial. When I found a place that I liked, I emailed the landlord/agent to ask:

Does the property have a separate entrance? Are utilities included? What type of terms are you seeking? Is there access to a bathroom? Is parking included?

If I liked their response, I followed up with an informal visit to check out the surrounding businesses and semi-discretely peep in the windows. After all that, if the property still made my “short list”, I called them back to schedule a tour.

Everyone that I spoke to was quick to ask “what purpose” I intended to use the space for. Initially, this was somewhat intimidating to me because (if I may be frank) most people, men in particular, just don’t take diaper bags seriously. So, I polished my elevator speech and evaded the “d” word. Next time someone asked the same question, I replied with confidence:

“I own a label called Watermelon Wishes under which I design and produce a line of bags and accessories for women and children. The space would serve as my studio.”

I also created a one page document entitled “Executive Summary” that provided potential landlords with a synopsis of my product and customer base, past performance and future goals. Beautifully crafted, I revisit this document often for inspiration.

Was it difficult to negotiate a lease?

No. The rent was within my budget and I felt no need to dicker over money --- and even if I did, I wouldn’t have, because I am not the haggling kind. Each lease is different though and it is critical that you read every single word. Do NOT skim through this type of document under any circumstance. In fact, you should feel free to take several days and read it no less than three times. If you come across something that is unclear, ask questions and get the information you need. This is a big decision and you want to make the best choice you can with the information you have.

In my case, I wanted to be absolutely certain that the landlord understood that I would be manufacturing products on site and the process involves a sewing machine, serger and use of an iron. I also wanted to disclose the fact that my children would be on the premise. Both of these items are included in my lease under a section entitled “additional terms”. Of course you can propose to add or remove any term you like in a lease; but I would suggest prioritizing your requests and limiting yourself to those items which are essential to your operations.

What type of obstacles did you encounter?

Oddly enough, two times, the agent/landlord who I met at each property confessed they could not find the key to let me in. After much ado, I did get to see both places; but, I still think this was a really strange coincidence if you consider I was the only common denominator. When the time came to make my final decision, I had narrowed the choice down to two units. The first was an office close to home, approximately 800 square feet and the second was 17 miles away, two floors and half the size. The price difference between them was $200. Briefly, I wrestled with the logistics of traveling a half hour each way to work and then I decided the commute was worth wild because the second location presented the opportunity to be surrounded by other unique specialty businesses as opposed to the emblematic office setting offered by the other. Plus, it cost $200 less; which I justified would offset the added fuel expense.

Did the space live up to your expectations?

Absolutely. I put a great deal of thought into defining the purpose of the space and the feeling which I wanted it to evoke. I can honestly say it is everything I had hoped it would be. As an added boon, my existing studio furniture fit the new space perfectly and I did not have to budget additional funds for furnishings. I believe it is critical to define the purpose of the space you want to create before you do anything else. It was important to me to find a place that was aesthetically pleasing and free from distractions. Believe it or not, I don’t have internet service in the studio; because, I want to ensure my time there is spent solely creating. The computer based portion of my work can be completed from home in the early morning and evening hours.

How did your family adjust to you working outside of the home?

Well, I’d be lying if I told you just fine. After spending 15 years at home, it was an adjustment for everyone --- especially me. Thankfully, I have an amazing husband and every time I would begin to doubt my ability to manage so many responsibilities, he quickly assured me it would be fine and reminded me not to be so hard on myself. (Thanks, baby!) It has been six weeks now and I think we’ve found a groove that harmonizes work and family. Of course, school will start soon and we’ll be back at the drawing table trying to figure out how to get everyone everywhere they need to be when they need to be there; but, that’s not really any different than it was before. In a nutshell, I think the key word will be elasticity--- and we will all have to give a little as needed.

My name is Heather and my hip partner, is Brooke. We love a deal. I remember as a mother of five young children living in the Oakton, Va area, anticipating Saturday mornings. If you are like me (or Brooke), you know what happens on Saturday mornings. As the sun begins to break the dawn, the dew sits softly on the grass, garage doors begin to open. Slowly treasures begin to make their way onto tables and blankets, awaiting for me to find them. I truly love other people's "junk." That "junk" clothed all my children in designer clothes, allowed us to have all of the expensive popular toys, and furnished my house in the latest styles. All for next to nothing.

And then, when craigslist came around, I was able to resale most of this "junk" to others. It was a beautiful cycle.

Instead of my normal savings of about 50%, she introduced me to BIG time savings. Over the past few years, we have both searched and shared our latest savings. And we have been amazed at the amount of items we could purchase for absolutely FREE! Whether it was stock piling toothpaste when they were "giving" it away or buying enough cake mix for the next year, we were there.

We want people to get rid of (or lose) the idea that couponing is for "the poor and needy" and change their thinking along the lines of coupon clipping for the "hip and happening (not to mention, smart)" shopper. You have to eat right? You have to clean too. Why not get a deal purchasing the necessities of life.

So Brooke and I decided it was time to share our secrets. We know where to get the coupons. We know how to read a coupon and the trick of combining them. We know how to use the coupon to its fullest saving power and how to organize these coupons. We know how to find the best deals, and when those deals come...how to get them. We admit, we pretty much know EVERYTHING when it comes to a coupon! We know because we LOVE them.

We teach a "hip to clip" coupon class 2 or 3 times a month. It is there, you can learn the art of couponing. You will be armed (hopefully with a huge HIP binder full of coupons) with the confidence that YOU can find the deals and YOU will save money and YOU are hip to be clipping (those that aren't using coupons are just plain CRAZY!). You can save on everything, if you are just willing to save time to clip!

Our blog provides savings in our community. We find the deals and you go out and get them. We love the local library reading program where each week our children can pick up a few coupons for free meals, activities or treats at the surrounding businesses. We are also fans of rebates too. This is the time of the year where places like Staples and Office Depot are giving away products. All you have to do is to be willing to immediately get those rebates sent in. I don't get out and garage sale as much as I used to, although I still get that excited feeling when I see the signs pointing the way to bargain bliss. I want to follow them, I really do. But I don't have the time, or the need as I once did. Now I find clipping a coupon makes me just as excited and my need of feeding 5 growing children (four boys!) filled.

While clothing is not my forte, I was recently overcome with the urge to sew a blouse. Like my diaper bags, it is also an original creation---from the depths of my imagination.

Crafted from Amy Butler's Bali Gate in Grass, I love that it can be worn belted or not and that the straps are wide enough to cover my bra straps!

Sewing Techniques and Tips ---How to sew a straight line

New to the Watermelon Wishes blog, Thursdays will now be devoted to those topics which fall under the header “sewing techniques and tips”.

Today, I have three simple tips to help you achieve nice straight stitches.

1. Thread the bobbin correctly. There most certainly is a right and wrong way, so be sure to reference the machine manual. My Singer Confidence has a handy sticker that depicts the proper way to thread the bobbin.

2. Use the stitching guides etched into the needle plate and/or presser foot as a focal point to keep your stitching evenly spaced and straight or make your own guides with a fine point permanent marker.

3. When stopping, prior to the end of a row of stitching, utilize the needle down function or turn the wheel towards you until the needle stops in the down position. This will allow you to make minor adjustments to the fabric while maintaining the prior stitch position.

Brand new to Watermelon Wishes, Wednesdays are now reserved for a column I have dubbed ‘Meet the Maker’. Since it’s my gig, I’ll go first; however, in the future you can look forward to reading profile excerpts from other artists in and around the Etsy community.

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

My name is Andrea Chapman and I am the founder of Watermelon Wishes. I was born in Spokane, Washington and migrated to the east coast in the early 1980’s. Nowadays, I reside in Haymarket, Virginia with my amazing husband of 15 years and our four fabulous children. Sewing is my craft of choice and I have established a niche designing custom diaper bags and accessories. My commercial studio is located in the quaint town of Middleburg, Virginia.

How did you learn to sew?

Largely self-taught, I have many fond memories watching my great-grandmother sew clothes for those she loved and my grandfather craft leather into beautiful holsters, chaps and bags (which I believe he also sold). For as long as I can remember, I have had a passion for bags and an attraction to textiles. In 2006, when disaster and opportunity collided, I founded Watermelon Wishes. Initially, I planned to market other people’s handmade goods under one umbrella. As my inventory began to arrive, the perfectionist in me was quick to spot any flaws in craftsmanship that existed. It seemed so obvious to me how to avert these mistakes. Not one for following directions, I do not enjoy working with patterns and instead create all of my own designs.

Where do you get ideas for new diaper bag designs?

My youngest child is 22 months and serves as daily inspiration. All of my products are born of necessity and tried and true. The diaper bag which I carry doubles as my purse; so, I can appreciate the need to have a stylish bag that is large enough to accommodate baby’s things as well as my own.

What types of materials do you enjoy working with?

Amy Butler fabric is my all time favorite material for diaper bags because it is colorful and washes beautifully. I recently started working with canvas and I especially like the look of those two mediums combined.

Besides sewing, what other crafts and activities do you enjoy?

Crocheting, scrapbooking, drinking coffee and chauffeuring my children from one activity to the next (not!).

What one piece of advice would you offer others who aspire to sell their handmade goods?

Every now and again, I can be "a fly by the seat of my pants" kind of girl; but most days, I like things planned down to the minute. Which is why I really do love it, when a plan comes together just perfectly. And, this week, a plan I have been formulating for years has materialized just as I had hoped.

Previously, I have shared the story of how Watermelon Wishes came to be. Much to my delight, the company has grown and continued to flourish. Two-fold, my success is due in part to a well written and practically executed business plan and the fact that I love what I do.

And without further ado the BIG news...I have made the jump and will be moving out of my home studio and into a commercial studio in Middleburg, Virginia!

Ever so charming, the new studio, is a 400 square foot two-story loft situated inside a renovated home which was built in the 1920's and has since been converted to a commercial space. It has hardwood floors, lots of wood molding and 4 sunny windows.

The next two weeks are sure to be busy as I prepare for the July 1st move; but, I will do my best to keep you updated on my progress and hope to put together a series of posts to share what I have learned during the process.

Last weekend, I tackled a project I've been batting around in my head for years: painting the kitchen table.

I selected a hue of yellow that reminds me of butter and is ever so cheerful.

Short on time, I did not paint the base of the table nor the chairs. Instead, I whipped up six fitted chair covers and a set of reversible placements.

Every now and then, a customer will surprise me with their fabric selections. I especially love it when someone selects a combination which I would probably never have chosen and it comes together absolutely beautiful.

The bag pictured, is crafted from three Amy Butler fabrics which on their own are stunning but when combined create a true one of a kind look. I especially love the whimsy evoked by the combination of orange and blue which are opposites on the color wheel.

While I like my diaper bag to be an extension of my personal style, there are many parents who prefer to have a gender specific theme. Shopping for girl fabric really is a breeze; however, finding modern prints that appeal to those expecting baby boys are much harder to come by and perhaps even more challenging is locating those fabrics one would consider to be gender neutral.

When shopping for masculine or unisex fabrics you may find it helpful to keep the following tips in mind.

---Polka dots, stripes and geometrical prints are generally gender friendly and come in a wide array of scales and colors.

---Nature prints, specifically those featuring trees, mushrooms and birds, are wildly popular and ideal for a baby boy or girl.

---Strike a perfect balance by selecting a textured fabric like wool, corduroy or denim for the exterior and a feminine floral for the interior.

---Prints that utilize red, green or orange as the primary color are good choices too.

While there are endless options, when it comes to shopping online, I always point my customers in the direction of Hawthorne Threads which offers a wide selection and stellar service, time after time. The story behind the name

When I was pregnant with our first child, my husband would rub my belly and say in deep voice "I wish I had a Watermelon, I wish I had a Watermelon." I'd laugh and he would too. Hence the name of our company, Watermelon Wishes.

Selected with care, a name can be used to bestow meaning and evoke sentiment. When naming a company, there are several factors to consider. The ability to build a brand and sentimental value were my top priorities.

Janis DeVore, president of DeVore Marketing advised me to select a name that could double as my web domain and suggested it be short enough for the entire url fit on my business cards.

Your company name should be unique but easy to remember and spell.

Although a bank teller once asked me “Do you sell Watermelon’s?” For the most part, the product or service you provide does not have to be incorporated into the company name but it should evoke conversation. On your business card you can include a tag line to explain what it is that you offer. For example: Watermelon Wishes “Handmade Diaper Bags and Accessories”.

Whenever someone asks me “What is Watermelon Wishes?” I simply tell them it is the brand under which I market a line of handmade diaper bags and accessories.

It is also very important that the name appeal to your customer base. The majority of my customers are expectant mothers who in a roundabout way can relate to the watermelon.

To attain maximum value and with the assumption that your business will grow, care should be taken to select a name that does not limit your ability to expand your offerings in the future. Let’s say I had named my company “Andrea’s Diaper Bags”...

Get a notebook and brainstorm, brainstorm, brainstorm. Write down anything that appeals to you and then come back to it in a few hours, days, weeks and see what you still like. Ask friends and family what they think. Host a blog or Facebook survey.

Last, but not least, before you commit to a name, key it into several search engines to be sure you will not be affiliated with a conflicting product base or service.

Well, I did it! To Isabel's spring wardrobe, I have added three pairs of handmade capris and a floppy sun hat. The weather here in Virginia is still a little chilly, so I paired the capris with a ruffle tank and denim jacket---for a winning combo that fetched my sweet girl loads of compliments from friends and strangers alike.

Now, if only she would stand still long enough for me to get a good photo!

Maybe I should introduce a line of toddler clothing and accessories...what do you think?

Inspired by LOVE

Inspiration is a lovely thing and I have been inspired by the order of Amy Butler “LOVE” fabric which recently arrived on my stoop. Today, I have set aside some time to deviate from what I do well---sewing diaper bags and the like---to make clothing.

More specifically, I want to sew a spring wardrobe for my sweet Isabel.

In yet another uncharacteristic move, I have purchased two patterns from which I hope to produce said clothing. Historically, patterns and I do not get along. I am not sure why but I imagine, it is somehow connected to the fact that I have no sense of direction and a distain for maps. It would be fair to say, I prefer the road less traveled.

In any event, I shall give it a whirl and will keep you updated on my progress as I venture into unchartered territory with nothing more than a few dozen bolts of beautiful fabric and a couple of Sew Easy patterns.

Up-Cycled Flower Ring

Supplies:

• 3 to 5 paper or silk flowers in assorted sizes

• Brad

• Recycled white plastic sealing plug from a carton of half and half, milk or orange juice

Tools:

• Small hole punch (1/8”)

Steps:

1. wash and dry the plug, leaving the ring and dome intact

2. punch a small hole in the center of the plug dome

3. stack the flowers largest to smallest and center them atop the plug dome

4. thread the brad through the flowers and plug dome

5. open the brad and secure the flowers to the plug dome

6. slip the ring onto the finger of choice

Two days ago, absent fanfare, cake or gifts---thanks to the children having the flu and a fall my husband took on some ice---I turned 39. If you promise to forgive me, I would like to take just a minute to throw a tiny pity party and then I will move quickly to my point.

Imagine…39 candles aglow atop a double Dutch chocolate cake. A bright flash, I smile for the photo op and with one waft blow those candles out, while making a single ~~~~wish~~~~.

(You know I can’t tell you what I wished for, or it won’t come true, so don’t ask.)

What I would like to say is that I’ve been giving a lot of thought to my turning 40 (a reality that is 363 short days away.) I recently reached out to friends, via Facebook, who have already crossed the threshold into what I have come to think of as “the second half of life”. Ever so kindly they offered up their reassurances that it really isn’t that bad. My favorite piece of guidance came from my friend Ilene, who wrote “Remember, the 40’s are totally about reinventing yourself, it will be so much fun!”

I am going to roll with that. Forty should be fun and I can think of no better time than now to take stalk of my life and set some goals for the future. This way, when the “day” does come and I enter into a new decade of life, I will do it with grace, poise and most importantly enthusiasm.

Just off the top of my head, there are a few things I’d like to do in the interim, such as become an Etsy Featured Seller and learn to needle felt. Let me give it some more thought and I will be back to post a top ten list of things I want to do before I turn 40.

We relish the dinner hour

If you have children, then you know how trying the dinner hour can be. Enough said.

Last month I read a blip in Real Simple magazine about a menu planning service called "Relish Relish". After my sister joined and Facebook'ed her love for it, I had to check it out.

What I discovered is that this service has the potential to theoretically change my life. For just seven bucks a month, I am guaranteed 5 great meals a week. I joined right away and love it! To date, even my pickiest eater (age 8) has gobbled up her dinner.

Once a week, I select my 5 favorite meals and print out the pdf file they prepare which includes a grocery list (sorted by category) and the week’s recipes (most of which require 5 steps or less).

I especially love the comprehensive grocery list, because I can pull my coupons ahead of time. I keep all of the recipes in page protectors and filed in one of my fabric covered three ring binders for future reference.

A stitch in time

Six. That is the maximum number of tasks that I can accomplish realistically within a day. I know this because I recently conducted a study of sorts in which my purpose was to answer one question: “Where did the day go?”

For three weeks, I chronicled my activities. Not what I wanted to do; but what I actually did. My findings surprised me. A self-confessed type-A personality, I love to make lists, especially to do lists. The longer the list, the better, I used to think. It wasn’t until I began tracking my activities, that I grasped the straightforward concept that there really are only so many hours in the day.

In addition to analyzing my actions, I kept a simple log of my feelings or mood throughout the day. What I learned, was on those days that I overscheduled myself, I consequently had more stress and that in turn negatively impacted my attitude. Likewise, those days that were loosely structured with little or no direction produced a similar feeling.

The ideal situation, I deduced, is a daily plan with clear limits. While I do have a Blackberry that affords me access to a variety of scheduling applications, it does not allow me the ability to impose clear limits; but instead, fuels my desire to over schedule every aspect of my life.

Because I do take pleasure in writing, particularly the handwritten word, I developed a one page template that allows me just enough space to set realistic expectations. I keep the completed pages organized in a pretty fabric covered three ring binder that is divided by month. A memento of sorts, I think it may be interesting to save the binder for my girls to look back on someday when they have a family of their own. There is space for me to note my general demeanor and share what the favorite part of my day was.

Now that the children are officially on winter break, thanks to the Blizzard of '09, I have some newfound free time in the mornings which I have been putting to good use in the studio.

This morning I used up the last bit of Amy Butler's Burgundy Gothic Rose to make this beautiful diaper bag which I have dubbed the "Daytripper".

As the name implies, it is perfect for a day out with baby. My sweet Isabel ( 15 months old) was drawn to it right away. The green and pink make for a stunning combination. Additional photos can be found in my Etsy shop.
